Honduras Mission Trip 2001

On July 19th we went to San Pedro Sula, Honduras on a short-term mission trip, we returned on July 28th. We invited Maryland Community Church to join us this year. There were 16 from Union Christian and 11 from Maryland, 27 in all.

We spent most of our time working at Cary Hill. Cary Hill is the compound that will house future short-term missionaries. We worked on the septic system. We spread several tons of gravel, laid sewer pipe, and poured concrete floors in one of the mission houses and in the bottom of the septic tank. Several layers of concrete block were laid for the walls of the septic tank.

The ground had to be dug out to run the sewer lines from the main line to the new buildings. The ground was so hard we had to use a pick to break the ground up so it could be shoveled out. It had not rained in this part of Honduras for a long time, and San Pedro Sula officials were about ready to start rationing the water. We prayed daily for rain and God answered our prayer. While we were there it rained three times. One night it rained about three inches. The day after the big rain, we had to shovel mud out of the trenches and the hole for the septic tank.

The sun was hotter than I remembered. In the past, we have gone in June; in July, the sun must have been straight over head. For the most part, we held up pretty well in the heat. We consumed approximately 25 gallons of water and 8 bags of ice in a 7 hour period each day at the work site.

Some of our other activities included attending church and Sunday school, going on home visits, and passing out layettes for babies. We held a mini- Vacation Bible School and men’s and ladies bible studies, and we got to pass out to the Honduran schoolchildren new tee-shirts that were donated by a screen printing company. Several of us were blessed, as we were reunited with old friends, and all of us made several new ones.

We were housed in a nice hotel, Villa Nuria Apart Hotel. Some apartments had three people and some four. The rooms were air-conditioned and had a kitchenette, two bedrooms, and a bathroom in each. On the compound of the hotel, there was a small store, restaurant, pool, and gym. The accommodations were very nice, but in the old mission house, we were all able to spend the evenings together as a group, which was nice.

The new mission compound will consist of five buildings. Two dorms, a kitchen, laundry and fellowship area and on the roof there will be a prayer porch, apartments for the host couples and a work shop with a garage to work on the vehicles.
