Melissa’s Message. . . . . |
|
This month I want to include an excerpt from one of my favorite books, The Practice of the Presence of God, by Brother Lawrence. This book was written over 300 years ago, but we can still benefit from its timeless message. "I still believe that all spiritual life consists of practicing God’s presence, and that anyone who practices it correctly will soon attain spiritual fulfillment. To accomplish this, it is necessary for the heart to be emptied of everything that would offend God. He wants to possess your heart completely. Before any work can be done in your soul, God must be totally in control. There is no sweeter manner of living in the world than continuous communion with God. Only those who have experienced it can understand. However, I don’t advise you to practice it for the sole purpose of gaining consolation for your problems. Seek it, rather, because God wills it and out of love for Him…His presence is a delight to our souls and spirits (29-30)." Brother Lawrence was a cook who learned that his time in communion with God should be the same whether he was busy in the kitchen or on his knees in his prayer closet. We can do the same today, no matter how busy our life seems! Let us remember the message from John 15. John 15:5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." Let’s remain closely connected to Jesus; there’s no sweeter way to live! Melissa |
